Google`s Newest Service: Google Voice - Call Recording

The call recording feature is another excellent service offered by Google’s new endeavor, and it’s especially useful for those who need to record calls for business use. The call recording feature on Google Voice may actually make physical recorders that attach to a phone line a thing of the past, as this feature is easier to use and much cheaper, seeing as how it will be free. A user must only press the number four on their phone to begin recording a call -- it’s that simple. Once their call is over, the recording can be listened to in Google Voice, which automatically saves a copy of the audio file.

This feature, much like the service itself, also raises privacy concerns. Call recording gives you the ability to record any phone call, both private and work-related, but as we all know, in some states it’s illegal to record a call without the other party's knowledge. Google is very wise. Perhaps as a way to save themselves from any legal trouble, Google Voice plays a message that both parties can hear when the recording begins. When the recording stops, another message is played informing both parties that the recording is no longer taking place.

Calls can only be recorded if they’re dialed from your Google Voice number. So, if a user wants to record a work call that they receive from their regular business line, they won’t be able to record it. Calls that the user initiates using the Click2Call or return call features on the Google Voice site also can’t be recorded. It’s a minor pitfall that may be improved in the future.

Something tells me this service will become wildly popular once it’s generally released to the public. There may be a waiting list to receive your Google number, but it certainly seems worth it. Aside from being jam-packed with useful, cool features, it’s also totally free. What’s not to love?
