Google`s Free GPS Service to Replace Standalone Devices? - Google’s Future

In the near future, the way Google’s new navigational system operates or appears may be slightly different because of the many opportunities currently being presented to Google in respect to their service. For example, businesses that want to be listed on Google’s navigation searches have already lined up. This can provide hefty amounts of money to Google, but it could also provide more options for users using the service.

The success of Google’s new navigational features for Droid phones largely depends on the quality of its speech recognition capabilities and its graphics displays. Chances are people will once again be willing to fork over hundreds of dollars for a standalone navigational device if the services provided by Google are not up to par with their standards – even if they are free!

Another thing that may impede Google’s success is a safety concern being expressed by many in the blogosphere. Currently, six states have laws banning the use of cell phones while driving, but who’s to say that a navigational device on a smartphone won’t prove to be just as distracting?

Will Stofega, an analyst for the research firm IDC, said safety issues are a real concern, especially if users begin performing entirely too many traffic or restaurant searches when they’re supposed to be concentrating on the road. "You don't want to be squinting at a cell phone display and having to take your glasses off or put them on," Stofega said. "When the service expands outside of Droids, some of these cell phone screens might be smaller than the iPhone."

Google has decided to pursue many interesting endeavors recently and as of right now, the company has yet to fail. Chances are their navigational service will become wildly popular, but there’s no saying for sure how it will eventually affect GPS manufacturers in the years to come. I guess we’ll just have to see how it all pans out.
