DreamColor Technology: Worth the Hype? - Indigo Presses

HP’s Indigo Presses are designed with graphic beauty in mind and feature the new DreamColor technology. These heavy-duty machines are hardly small and compact. They are made for serious graphic work by professionals who understand how to use cutting-edge technology. Indigo Presses are designed for serious industrial and commercial printing - but anyone, even amateur graphic designers and home-office users, can have the power of these presses if they can pay the price. On all Indigo Press products, HP is currently offering monthly payment and leasing plans in an effort to make these devices more affordable to the every day consumer. Are they?

    HP Indigo Press 3050

This serious machine retails from the manufacturer in the US for $5,470, $6,564 in Canada.

    HP Indigo Press 5000

Filled with gorgeous inks, this press starts at $4,870 (USD) and $5,844 (CAD).

    HP Indigo Press w3250

Offering direct-mail and other publishing services meant to delight, the w3250 starts at $5,620 (USD) and $6,744 (CAD).

    HP Indigo Press ws2000

The ws2000 boasts all sorts of publishing applications, including ID-making abilities, and enough features to keep anyone busy and entertained with their images. This technology can be yours for a starting price of $6,020 (USD), $7,224 (CAD).

    HP Indigo Press ws4050/ws4500

Designed to run 24/7, the ws4050 and ws4500 models offer label-printing, truly fluorescent colors, and tons of other graphic features sure to delight anyone with an aesthetic eye. These Indigo presses cannot be purchased online, and no pricing information is available for them. However, the pricing plan is still available even with this high-tech equipment.

    Color Anyone Can Afford?

Honestly, most graphic designers won’t have a few thousand dollars to plunk down on high-end technology, no matter how great all those colors might sound. Not everyone needs a commercial-grade printing product to manage their images, even if DreamColor does sound like a promising and intriguing new invention. Does HP make a single DreamColor product that almost anyone could really afford?

HP Photosmart Pro B9180 Photo Printers

Retailing for an average of $500-$720 USD, these photo printers offer plenty of color-management tools and even work with PhotoShop to make graphic enhancements that much easier. These printers are truly small enough to fit into a home office area and offer user-friendly tools so that most anyone can operate the features, even without a special technical degree. Of all the current DreamColor products, the Photosmart Pro is by far the most affordable and probably the only product that’s truly feasible for more casual, at-home use.
