    Data Loss Disasters

When so much of your valuable data is held in an electronic device such as a smart phone, an MP3 player, a laptop, or a desktop computer, losing it can be a real crisis. Fortunately, the data can often be recovered, but it isn’t cheap. This article discusses some of the strangest stories of data loss from data recovery companies.

As a bonus, I’ll also include some tips at the end to help keep this kind of trauma from happening to you. Making regular back-ups goes without saying, but there are a few other tricks you can try if you’re seeing some problems; I’ll mention a couple of those.

If you do lose data in your system, you can take solace from the fact that you’re far from alone. Engadget ran a contest a little less than two years ago for the most heart wrenching tale of data loss, with the winner to receive a Memina 2 GB Pocket Rocket USB flash drive. They received 29 pages of comments, and it took them several days to read through all the entries (far more than 500, to judge from the ones they highlighted as particularly pathos-evoking).

Data recovery companies see the chaos as a normal part of the job. “Ontrack Data Recovery receives more than 100,000 requests for data recovery service every year so we come across some pretty strange data disasters,” said Jim Reinert, senior director of Software and Services for the company. Disklabs, a UK-based data recovery company, works on 50,000 cases every year. The good news about the disasters you’re about to read is that, in every case, the data recovery company called in was able to recover the data. Even so, I wouldn’t suggest you try any of these at home!
