Cell Phone Tracking Systems
Cell phone tracking systems were made possible thanks to the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) featured in most modern cell phones. Some cell phone companies offer proprietary versions of tracking systems, but there are also some independent ones on the market. What do they let you do? Keep reading to find out.
Do you know where your friends are at this moment?

Have you ever had the urge or need to track where someone is at a particular point in time? Well, short of having a private investigator or actually talking to the person, this was once very difficult. Now, however, with the aid of new programs that incorporate Global Positioning Systems (GPS) that have already been built into your cell phone, this task has been made much easier. There are currently one hundred million cell phone users that have GPS built into their cell phones. What used to be only in expensive cars has now been integrated into cell phones to propel users even further into the Information Age.
A Global Positioning System uses a receiver to pick up signals from satellites in space to help determine the system's location, speed, direction, and time. The inclusion of GPS in cell phones primarily came about due to FCC regulations requiring them to be built into cell phones several years ago. They claim this was made a requirement in order for cell phone users to be tracked by police or rescue workers in case of emergencies when dialing 911.
Phone makers such as Nextel, Sprint, and Verizon responded to this requirement by installing GPS receivers in all of their phones. Other manufacturers, such as Cingular, created technology that can determine a cell phone’s location using signals generated from nearby cell phone towers. The use of actual receivers offers a much more accurate location reading, although it may become skewed in densely populated city settings.
