    Blu-Ray - Why not HD-DVD?

So why will Blu-Ray discs be the next DVD, and not HD-DVD? HD-DVD shares some features with Blu-Ray, but it is different enough that it won’t be able to keep up with Blu-Ray. Like Blu-Ray, HD-DVD relies on the move from a red laser to a blue one. That’s where most of the similarities end; the storage capacity of an HD-DVD disc is where it falls short. HD-DVD will hold 15 GB, and later 30 GB, but you won’t ever  dual layer HD-DVD. The standard Blu-Ray will hold 25 on one layer.

Blu-ray also has strong backing by a variety of companies -- possibly stronger than HD-DVD. To make Blu-Ray a hit, you need people producing the hardware and the discs, and companies using them in their products. Companies willing to back Blu-ray include:

    • Apple Computer, Inc.
    • Dell Inc.
    • Hewlett Packard Company
    • Hitachi, Ltd.
    • LG Electronics Inc.
    • Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.
    • Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
    • Pioneer Corporation
    • Royal Philips Electronics
    • Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
    • Sharp Corporation
    • Sony Corporation
    • TDK Corporation
    • Thomson Multimedia
    • Twentieth Century Fox
    • Walt Disney Pictures

We have companies that sell computers, and companies that produce the media and players. At the bottom of this list are two of the biggest companies in the movie business. All of these companies will be using Blu-Ray in the near future.
