Back to School Shopping Tips
The back-to-school season has again begun and the retail world is busy struggling to secure every dollar they can from the shopping public. One of the most often sought-after purchases for the back-to-school season is the home PC. It is also one of the biggest ticket items for sale at this time of year.
A lot of people will take the trip down the local big box store and seek out the advice of any number of commissioned sales people to determine what product will best fit their needs. Others will turn to the Internet and visit all the usual suspects looking for the best deal rather than the right deal. Many will end up buying more than they need because they've become convinced they need it and others will end up buying a machine they will curse and lament until enough time has passed that they can justify replacing it.
This is not an article for the experienced computer user but for the friends and relatives of said computer user. Print this article out, give it to them to read and hopefully understand so that you won't lose your precious Saturday afternoon going from one big box retailer to another with your neighbor's friend's brother because "you know computers."
Buying a computer is a stressful affair for a lot of people because it is a relatively complicated product and, despite being in the average home for over a decade, a misunderstood product. Many early concepts of the PC industry and the hyper evolution it experienced in its early years caused a lot of people to lose touch with the product in an attempt to enjoy those things they could digest at their own pace.
In an attempt to reduce the stress for the non-geek consumer I will cover a number of basics to consider when purchasing a home computer. This article will not be discussing any particular manufacturers or products but rather is intended to act as a generalized guide to understanding what the individual components do and why you would or wouldn't want them. Additionally, you will find that a lot of the points that are covered in this article won't be easy to find answers to and many a commissioned sales person will scramble to find the proper answer to your question.
