Apple Rumors - iPhone continued
I'm sure you have heard that Apple released the iPhone SDK recently. YAY, now we can develop our own programs for the iPhone! Not so fast, programming guru. Apple has limited the release of the SDK, and it doesn't look like many people are getting it. Unless you’re a major software developer, getting it is like shooting dice.
Using your own software isn't that easy either. It all has to go through Apple, and the iTunes store. For Apple, it's a step in the right direction, but they need to hurry up, fully deploy the SDK, and hopefully not limit the content in the iTunes store.
You thought we were done with iPhone rumors, didn't you? Well we're not! Apple first attempted iTunes-enabled cell phones with a third party and that didn't work. Then came the iPhone, and that has done well for itself. Now it looks like Apple will throw a new iPhone into the mix.
This time it's more phone than PDA. A recent patent filed by Apple shows the early design for a flip iPhone. From the drawings it will resemble a typical flip phone, but with dual touch sensitive screens. It reminds me of a pimped-out Nintendo DS, but cell phone sized. I've seen no other word on this device or where it is in product development, but I doubt you will see it this year.
Along the lines of this flip screen iPhone, another iPhone might be making its way to the store: an iPhone "nano." We all know what the iPod nano is, and the same concept will be applied here. Other than a few mock-ups of this device, not much more is known about it.
Some say we could see this in Q4 of 2008, but I doubt it. I don’t think it’s a good idea at all. You can only shrink the screen so much before it’s pointless. Your current typing method is via fingers on a virtual keyboard. You shrink the screen, you shrink the keyboard and now you are going to need a stylus. I doubt we will see any other kind of iPhone for a while.
Okay, that covers all the rumors on the iPhone; no more surprises there.
