Apple Joins Intel, Future Products
Having discussed in an earlier article why Apple dropped IBM for Intel, DMOS now concentrates on what it means to the companies' future product lines. Changing the CPU and platform allows Apple to do some interesting things they couldn't before.
One of these new things is what Apple can do in the mobile sector. I'm sure that if IBM was willing to spend the money and time on the G5 processor, they could get it shoved into an iBook or Powerbook without a problem. Considering the various embedded devices that the PowerPC resides in (not to mention the three upcoming mainstream game consoles that will contain parts of PPC architecture), IBM could use some of the PPC developemt to make low(er) power models of it. However, Apple and IBM seem to have agreed to disagree on this particular market. And of course, the issue of IBM producing a 3GHz G5 is a different animal.
As a result, Intel will now provide their mobile expertise to the packaging skill of Apple. So let's take a look at Intel technology to see why Apple bought into it. At the moment, the 2nd generation “Centrino” platform (Dothan and Sonoma) is the king of the size/efficiency market, and to be honest, can also lay claim to a piece of the overall performance crown in anything that can be considered a mobile package. Look at the Dell XPS Gen2 for an example. That is only going to improve with the introduction of the 3rd generation Centrino platform, which will contain the processor codenamed “Yonah.”
