As with everything else in this world, there are trademarks, version numbers, revisions, and abbreviations of countless words that don't make sense. All of this ends up successfully confusing the user with no experience and knowledge in that particular area. You see, we're talking about terms such as GSM, UMTS, CDMA, EV-DO, 2G, 3G, pre-4G, UMTS Revision 8 with LTE, and the like.
If some or all of the aforementioned terms sound alien, then have no fear. Our mission in this article is to explain, in a straightforward and comprehensible way, all of this without dwelling too much on the technicalities. Sure, we'll point out their advantages, disadvantages, limitations, and objectives. But once we have a basic foundation, then we'll start to emphasize 4G.
4G is currently one of those "hot" technology topics that sounds more than impressive on paper and creates havoc with anxious customers who have unrealistic expectations. Sure, 4G, as you will find out throughout this article, has lots of potential. However, there's too much going on right now.
Thanks to millions of people awaiting 4G like it's a redeemer, there's some sort of "war" going on right now between the possible competitors. Guess why? There's lots of green in it, since the demand is sky-high. Thus, it's a really profitable business opportunity! Arun Sarin, Vodafone CEO, tried to calm the waters by stating some strong points regarding the topic of 4G at the World Mobile Congress (Barcelona). His ideas were backed up by John Chambers of Cisco Systems as well.
In a nutshell, we are going to cover all of the above in this article.
