    2007 Review/Preview - Vista, Leopard and iPhone

IT HAS ARRIVED!! And it's about time.  After several delays and setbacks, Vista is out in the wild now. Following the usual Microsoft tradition, it has already had many updates and fixes. All the promised features aren't there and it still has a few bugs, but we have it now. This has to be one of the biggest milestones in 2007.

As great an accomplishment it was, the public doesn't seem as thrilled as Microsoft. So far it has about the same market share as OS X. It is slowly picking up speed as more drivers are developed and Vista becomes more stable and tweaked. A huge part of Vista is Direct X 10. Now there aren't many games that take advantage of this yet, but there are many games on the horizon that will take advantage of it. As these games are released and force people onto Vista, the total number of computers with Vista will increase. Until there are some reasons to upgrade to Vista, people will stick with XP.

Apple is going to release their next version of OS X, Leopard.  From the previews I've seen, it looks like one of the biggest changes to OS X since its initial release.  Mac users should definitely give Leopard a shot when it is released. Many aspects of the OS have been given updates.  Finder for one has a substantial upgrade.

My impression from the demos I've seen is that Leopard has the features that Vista should have had. It seems Apple has been able to take features from the early concept ideas of Vista, which were canned during development at Microsoft, and implement them into OS X.  If I was at Redmond, I'd be scratching my head and checking my rear view mirror; OS X is coming and it's in a Ferrari.

    iPhone

One of the most talked about innovations of 2007 is the iPhone.  Many articles have been written here about the iPhone, view every aspect possible.  Apple's take of the PDA Cell phone has been very exciting.  It has finally been released and has been a blockbuster seller.

It looks like a great device, but with a very large price tag. Apple changed the world with their iPod, and I think the iPhone will fallow suit.  With a few new models in the near future, Apple could take the whole PDA and cell phone market by storm.
