    2007 Review/Preview - Motherboards and Chipsets

Intel's new chipsets are still on schedule for a Q3 release. I won't bore you with the same details that have been known since January. Still, there are some new tidbits that have come to light.

The X38, the top of the line chipset to replace the x975, will support Crossfire.  There is a rumor swirling around about possible SLI compatibility too. It appears that it will also be a very toasty little chipset. Those huge coolers that wrap all around motherboards these days look they will be the new standard for boards with this chipset.

AMD and ATI, well only AMD now, will be putting out their monster of a motherboard. The RD790's specs were leaked early this year and hopefully will be seen in some boards by Q4 of 2007. They may slip into 2008.

The most notable item on this board is its 4 x16 PCI-Express slots. Please forward all questions about the need for four slots to AMD; I'm just as clueless as you. At most I could see a need for three: two  for Crossfire and one for a graphics card physics.

The only other logical answer would be three or four for Crossfire cards.  If this is the case, AMD/ATI needs to get their collective butts into developing better graphics cards so we don't need to fill four slots just to keep up with nVidia.
