Belkin 802.11g Wireless DSL/Cable Gateway Router - Range
(Page 4 of 7 )
The range was good overall. I was able to connect all over my house, except for a small dead spot...where the signal had to pass through four walls and a refrigerator. I wasn't expecting it to work there anyway. I did get a weak signal in one of the bedrooms. In that case, the signal had to go through four walls and the laundry room.
For the next test, I took the computer outside to check the range. Braving about eighteen inches of snow, I took the computer around my yard. I got a great signal throughout my backyard. The router is located near the back of my house, so my computer was in direct sight of the router most of the time. When it wasn't, there was a tree blocking the view. When I moved to the front yard, the signal weakened, and I eventually lost it altogether. I did get a signal as far as my sidewalk, but the connection was very slow and hardly usable. To get the signal to the computer in the front yard, the router had to send the signal through 3 walls and my garage, and deal with the cars and the metal garage door between it and the computer.
During most of the time that I tested this router, I was in the same room or very close to it. I did use it a few times outside of the general area. On a daily basis I was very pleased with the quality of the connection I had. A few times the signal was dropped for no apparent reason, but I was able to regain it quickly. Either the connection came back on its own, or if not, resetting the computer did the trick.
