ASUS WL-500G Premium Review - Installation
(Page 2 of 4 )

Once you get it hooked up and connect to the wireless connection on your computer, you need to point your browser to the ever famous 192.168.1.1. This will take you to the router configuration. The username and password can be
found in the manual.
For people that don't understand much of what is in the left column, there is a wizard to help even the most computer illiterate people set up a network with
security to protect yourself and your computer. With some poking around you can find all the settings you need and expect from a brand name wireless router.
I highly recommend some type of protection. Even the most basic level will deter most people that want to get in on the "free" Internet access you are giving out. I didn't do this and I found 15 people on my network. This wasn't going to fly so I put on WAP and now we're down to the three that I wanted on.

Setting up USB devices on this router does take a little bit of reading. There is a USB sub-group that controls most of the USB device tweaking. Setting up a web camera has its own menu, but the USB hard drives needs a little more input. You must create users, and then select the folders to share, as well as who has what kind of access to them. You have the option of read only or the ability to write and read files in much the same way permissions are set up on computer networks.

Printers are totally different to hook up. After you physically hook up the USB cord, the rest is all on the computer. I went into the instruction book to see how to set up a printer. Surprisingly it's not the same way as a network printer. If you follow the steps through, you will have the printer up and connected in no time flat. I found the printer easier than the hard drive to set up.
