Intel and nVidia Hop In Bed - Is nVidia Inside Any Better?

One question I do have to ask is what does this say about Intel chipsets currently? People are still buying i875 and i865 based motherboards that have been adapted for LGA775 duty instead of the newer options. I'm sure they aren't seeing this series internally as a success. But does that mean they are essentially going to give up, like they have for Itanium or rival AMD has done for every market outside of the server space?

I would hope not, because I think for this particular iteration they misjudged how much they could change in one go, especially without a big performance gap to support it. This begs the next question, which is, what is nVidia going to bring to the table that is any different? We know there will be PCIe; that's only in their best interest after all. The main question is about DDR2, and as of yet it's much too early to tell.

One thing I can say is, if they do make use of a DDR2 memory controller, aren't they just going up the same creek as Intel has, again without a paddle? If they instead choose to use a DDR dual channel solution, what are they offering that's any different from the i915P chip that isn't managing to sell well? I'm not sure this is going to drive Intel CPU sales all on its own, as really they will be offering the same cookie that's already being pushed, and rejected, just with a different name.

Are people going to buy because it says "nVidia" on it instead? One word of difference I hear being tossed around is that of SLI. I can't see that being anything other than a marketing tool; the hardcore gamers might be enticed to bite because of that, but it's been shown often enough that AMD's processor offerings provide the better performance in that area anyway. Since SLI will be on both platforms, they won't be able to use that alone to lure in more buyers, not when the other product filets them there.
