For this review, we gave this thing a run through a solid test suite:
Adobe After Effects
Super Pi
3DMark 2k1SE
Comanche4
ScienceMark
WinRAR
DivX
LAME MP3 Encoding
Windows Media Encoder
Two systems were a part of this:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Albatron K8X800 Pro II
Kingston Hyper X 3000 *(timings of 2.5-4-4-8 to match Infineon ram)
Intel 2.4C @ 3.2 GHz (to make more even the benches between the two)
Soltek 86SPE-L
Infineon PC3200
The shared parts were:
2x60GB IBM 120GXP HD's in 64k stripe RAID 0 (Silicon Image controller on Intel, Via on AMD)
Radeon 8500 LE @ 281/281 MHz Core/Mem
Custom water cooling for both CPU's
Adobe After Effects
There are two parts to this benchmark. The first computation is mainly CPU based, while the second is more system oriented. For more info, go to Media Motion. Thanks to Adobe for the test version of Adobe After Effects 6.0 (AE) used in this review.
As you can see, they are fairly close in the first computer, with the P4 winning by 25 seconds, 2:20 to 2:45. In the second comp though, the P4 dominates by almost 10 minutes, 25:42 to 34:30. Hyper-threading, better SSE2 use, and memory throughput all come into play here.
I also had an Adobe Photoshop benchmark attempted, however my older version of PS 6.0 did not like the Athlon 64 at all. If I get a newer trial version similar to the AE I have, I'll update the review.
