AOpen AK86-L Motherboard Review - Conclusion

For a "stripper" board, there's a lot to like that AOpen has done. For 90 bucks US retail, you get all the essentials to get you into a socket 754 setup, and even some bonuses along the lines of SilentTEK/BIOS. If you are going to go in cheap, this way you get in with a manufacturer who has a history for quality motherboards. Just make sure to stick to the older BIOS revisions if you plan to use two memory modules. Otherwise, you stand to lose speed and control.

    Highs:

    • No gimmicky add-ons hardware-wise
    • Great board layout
    • Top performance in many categories
    • Quiet PC features

    Lows:

    • No AGP/PCI lock
    • Battery is an accident waiting to happen
    • Recent cop-outs in BIOS
