If you're like many people, you've heard a lot about the iPad and the iPhone 4. You might like to own both, but can't afford or justify it. So which should you choose? This article will help you to decide.
Unless you do not own a television, rarely surf the Internet, or abstain from reading print media, the likelihood of you seeing advertisements for the iPad or the iPhone 4 are very high. Both products were released in the past year, and both were and still are very hot items in the world of gadgets and technology.
If you are not too familiar with either of these Apple products, but are still tempted by the thought of owning one, you may be overwhelmed by the amounts of information that must be consumed prior to making a purchase decision. If you identify your personal needs first, however, the decision making process on whether to buy an iPad or an iPhone 4 becomes much clearer. Here are some comparisons between the two products that cover their major selling points in terms of design, performance, and features.
Which one wins when it comes to performance?
This category is a bit surprising, as the iPhone 4 is actually the better performer, despite being smaller. It has 512 MB of RAM compared to just 256 MB found in the iPad. Both of the devices also sport the same 1 GHz A4 processor from Apple. Whether or not these specs stay the same for the next edition of the iPad remains to be seen, but one might expect more “oomph” next time around.
Storage is very important to me, considering my affinity for downloading music and other media. Which will accommodate my needs better?
There is not much difference in this department. The iPhone 4 is offered in a 16 GB or 32 GB version. Meanwhile, the iPad comes in three capacities: 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB. As you can see, the iPad's 64 GB version offers the most storage and doubles the iPhone 4. While that's great, it still may not be enough for those who view the iPad as a laptop replacement. The iPhone 4, on the other hand, will primarily be used as a phone, so its storage capacities should suffice in most cases.
I like to message on the go. Which of the two devices is better?
Both devices are great for on-the-go messaging. Of course, the iPad is not as portable as the iPhone 4, and you would likely not bring it along with you just for that purpose, as it may be too big for constant travel.
The iPhone 4, on the other hand, is very portable, but that backfires in a way. Its virtual keyboard is great, but if you have to type long messages your hands could tire from having to use its smaller keys. The iPad gives you a much larger virtual keyboard, and it can also be connected to an external keyboard or a keyboard dock that will give you the leisure of typing on a conventional keyboard, which may be more natural for some.
I am used to reading good old magazines and paperbacks, but the prospect of being able to read on an electronic device is intriguing. Which is better as an e-reader, the iPhone 4 or the iPad?
Those who say size does not matter would be wrong in this particular instance. You can read via the iBooks app on either the iPad or the iPhone 4. However, the iPad's larger display makes it better for such a task. The iPad has a 9.7-inch display, while the iPhone 4's display is just 3.5 inches. The iPhone 4 does boast a very impressive Retina display, but its smaller size could wear on your eyes after reading for prolonged periods of time. With the iPad, there is less squinting involved, and it also mimics the size of some actual books.
Does the iPad's size advantage make it clearly better than the iPhone 4 for viewing videos and browsing the web as well?
Yes, the same holds true when it comes to viewing videos, surfing the web, playing games, and other similar “viewing-intensive” tasks. Most people will likely prefer to view videos and perform similar tasks on a larger display, and the iPad's is nearly three times bigger than that of the iPhone 4.
Still, that does not mean that the iPhone 4 is a complete failure in this regard. Its 960 x 640 Retina display has the highest resolution of any phone, and it provides graphics that are out of this world. The iPad's graphics won't be quite as sharp, but they are still excellent thanks to its 1,024 x 768 resolution.
Although both the iPad and iPhone 4 have been shown to have their own advantages, it really boils down to the user's needs when it comes to determining which is the better product. In the end, both are solid devices that should make many consumers happy, regardless of what they are used for.
