iHome iH5, an iPod Clock Dock Review - Summing it all up
(Page 5 of 5 )

The biggest drawback that I, personally, have encountered, is that the creators of the iHome werent too picky about the remote control frequencies they picked to use. My iHome sits on top of my tv cabinet in my bedroom, above the television. It just so happens that some of the buttons on my Sony TV remote control, also access features in my iHome. Most notably, of course, is the POWER button. Whenever I hit the power button on my Television, the iHome goes into sleep mode, and starts playing music. This is a major annoyance, but not enough to make be get rid of either unit.
Here is a list of pros and cons:
Pros:
- Wonderful integration of your ipod and an alarm clock
- Asthetically pleasing, matches the iPod well
- The sound quality is excellent
- Charges your iPod as you sleep
- Can hook up external audio including non-iPod MP3 Players
- Optional remote available
- Digital AM/FM radio tuner
- Backlit controls and optical adjustment knobs
Cons:
- Only charges iPods with docking connector
- Cannot change playlists from remote
- Remote sensor conflicts with other appliance remote controls
- Have to remove iPod from protective skins to use
- No ‘presets’ for the radio
- Gradual awakening could be more gradual
Overall, I am happy with my iHome. Since I am picky about my music, its nice to be able to specify my own music for when I sleep and wake. The sound quality of the unit is good enough, that I sometimes turn it on when Im in that area of the house, instead of the larger unit in the living room.
On a scale of 1-10, I’m giving this product a 7. I little more integration on the iPod side (choosing playlists, for example) and a better selection of RF frequencies would have made a TON of difference in my book. Not everyone will have the same issues, but they are enough to drop it a few notches in my eyes.
