iHome iH5, an iPod Clock Dock Review

For those of you not in the know, the iHome iH5 is a clock radio for your iPod. It has all the features of your standard clock radio, but with the added ability to play tunes directly from your iPod. For those of you who, like me, would like to sleep, wake, or just listen your own music instead of what the radio happens to be playing, this might be just for you.

So before delving into the review, lets take a look at the published specifications

    Product Features

    Alarm

      • Wake to your docking iPod, radio or buzzer
      • Easy-to-set alarm
      • Alarm reset turns off alarm and automatically resets it for same time the following day
      • Sure alarm battery backup maintains clock setting and ensures alarm wake time in case of power failures
      • Gentle Wake peacefully wakes you with gently ascending alarm volume
      • iPod alarm backup if iPod is the selected wake-to source and iPod is not docked, a buzzer will sound instead

    Radio

      • Clear AM/FM reception
      • Built-in Automatic Frequency Control (AFC)
      • PLL Digital radio tuning
      • External AM antenna for best reception

    iPod interface

      • Included dock inserts ensure a snug fit for any type of iPod with dock connector; there's also an insert that allows you to sit the iPod shuffle in the dock, but it requires the included stereo cable for actual connection to the iHome.
      • Stereo analog cable included to connect non-docking iPod models.

    Auto-Set features

      • Time and date preset at the factory
      • Adjust preset time to any of seven different time zones at the touch of a button
      • Clock adjusts for daylight-savings time automatically

    Display and design

      • High-fidelity stereo speakers in specially designed isolate speaker chambers
      • Extra-large, backlit custom LCD display
      • Display indicators show clock/calendar, iPod info, radio tuning, volume level, alarm information
      • Amber backlight on all primary buttons

    Reson8 sound chamber

      • Amplifier designed to take full advantage of iPod frequency response for accurate, clear audio reproduction
      • Custom Strontium-Ferrite speakers for increased sensitivity, producing clearer, crisper highs, richer, more responsive midrange and fuller, driving bass
      • Exclusive one-piece speaker chambers minimize vibration for distortion-free audio
      • Detailed dynamic stereo sound that does justice to every track on your playlist, whether it's classical or rock

    Sleep

      • Fall asleep to your iPod or AM/FM radio
      • Programmable sleep with 120, 90, 60, 30 or 15-minute scheduled shutdown
      • Adjustable sleep volume allows you to select a comfortable sleep volume without affecting the wake or listening volume levels
      • Gentle Sleep gradually decreases music volume

    Specifications

    • Power: 15 V, 1.2 amp AC adapter
    • Battery: 2 AA for battery backup (not included)
    • Dimensions (WxHxD): 9.2 X 2.7 x 5.5 in./23.4 x 6.9 x 14.1 cm
