Zune Too Soon? - Hey good looking

    Can I get your math?

The Zune sports Windows Mobile software running on a 400MHz DSP processor, a 30GB solid state hard drive, and built-in WiFi. Kick in an FM tuner and you have a serious piece of hardware. (I won't say Apple, but its impossible not to compare it to an iPod -- they even look similar!). This serious piece of machinery has a three-inch LCD screen and 802.11 b/g wireless capabilities. Japanese electronics Giant Toshiba is responsible for building this hot little brick for Microsoft; they had to file its specifications with the FCC, which they did on October 6.

    What makes Zune special?

What makes the Zune stand out? How is it going to be the successful product that its makers are hoping (and working to make sure) it will be. According to the recent filing, the Zune has a lot to distinguish itself. "Once your wireless setting is set to on, you will be able to send and receive photos and promotional copies of songs, albums, and playlists from other users."

    Wi Fi

Microsoft's GM of marketing Chris Stephenson says "We see a great opportunity to bring together technology and community to allow consumers to explore and discover music together." Zune is expected to enable its users to interact and share music together using its unique Wi Fi feature. Shared songs will only be playable three times over the course of three days, however. This is Zune's Unique Selling Point; it could also be a technology that never catches on with mainstream media player users. But if it does, then Microsoft has taken MP3 players to the next level (wireless sharing). Of course, you can turn the Wi Fi off, as with any good wireless connection.

You can share with up to four different devices accessing your device at the same time and you get visual notification whenever a listener accesses your device.

    Online Subscription for Music Downloads

The Zune would possibly offer an online service (expect protected WMA, I hate that format) that enables subscribers to "listen" to all the songs in the library, or they can buy and download the songs permanently. The service will also offer artist updates and news.
