Microsoft officially unveiled its new Windows Phone 7 platform last Monday morning in New York. During the unveiling, Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer promised that the Windows Phone 7 operating system, no matter which one of the new phones it comes on, would have something to offer users from various demographics looking for a phone that is suitable for personal use, business use, or both.
During the event, there were five phones that were previewed to the public that would carry the new Windows Phone 7 OS. The Dell Venue Pro and the HTC HD7 were shown, both of which are expected to be released by the end of this year. The HTC HD7 will offer a large display, and the Dell Venue Pro is designed for rugged use.
Meanwhile, set for a release date of November 8, are the Samsung Focus, the HTC Surround, and the LG Quantum, which were the other three phones debuted in-depth on Monday morning. The HTC surround promises to cater to media fans, as it will boast Dolby Surround Sound speakers. The LG Quantum, on the other hand, will be geared more towards business professionals. Four other devices were also briefly introduced.
The Windows Phone 7 OS is being touted as living somewhere in the middle ground between Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems. It will supposedly offer more flexibility than the rigid iOS, but it will also stray from being as open-ended as Android. By avoiding either extreme, the company hopes it can carve out a special niche in the cellular market to counteract the popular iPhone and Android devices.
Ballmer said that two key phrases were central to the development of Windows Phone 7: always delightful and wonderfully mine. By calling it always delightful, Microsoft is suggesting that the OS is practical and user-friendly. Referring to the OS as wonderfully mine is a way to suggest that it is highly customizable to fit users' individual needs.
Of course, since Windows Phone 7 is a Microsoft creation, consumers can expect the new devices carrying the OS to also come with several other Microsoft-related features. Professionals and others looking for productivity help can look forward to mobile capabilities in the realms of Microsoft Office as well as email. Although it will not be available during the initial release, a copy and paste feature will be integrated into Windows Phone 7 devices in 2011.
As far as entertainment goes, users can expect access to the Zune music service, as well as gaming via Xbox Live. Social networking fans will not have to worry about missing any important updates, as Facebook is expected to be fully integrated as well. Other Microsoft features to anticipate on Windows Phone 7 devices include Bing Maps and the Bing search engine.
Besides the expected Microsoft selections, there are also some third-party features that are promised as well. Among those are features from well-known companies such as Netflix, eBay, IMDB, and more.
As the new Windows Phone 7 devices are released, the race for mobile supremacy should become very heated, to say the least.
