Top Five Music Phones of 2008

2008 was a ground-breaking year for the music phone. One of the most popular trends in cell phone technology is the integration of a music player into the already technologically-advanced phone. It won't be long before MP3 players become obsolete like record players, tape players, and old-school gaming consoles.

Technology has become a part of everyday life, which means our gifts each year don't resemble the gifts of Christmases past. MP3 players, GPS devices, cell phones, HDTVs, Blu-ray disc players -- these are the gifts of our generation. After all, who didn't love finding a new electronic gadget under the tree this Christmas morning?

One of the most popular gifts happens to be cell phones; the more features, the better. Just as people have become expert multi-taskers, able to text and talk and drive at the same time, consumers expect their electronics to give them the most bang for their buck with features galore. The most coveted feature in new cell phones is an MP3 player, and many of the year's best phones did not disappoint. Here's a look at the top five music phones of 2008.

    5. Samsung UpStage

It doesn't happen very often, but sometimes a cell phone comes along that has the potential to lead the industry down a brand new path. Sure, there are many cell phones on the market that come equipped with an MP3 player; some players even perform better than the UpStage, but the design and ease of use on other devices seems to have come as an afterthought. That's not the case with the UpStage SPH M620. Its dual-sided design combines cell phone and MP3 player ergonomics in a way that has never been seen before.

The devices decent call and music quality and extended battery, combined with its design was enough to land it at the number five spot on the list of best music phones of 2008. The UpStage isn't just a pretty face, though. It also comes equipped with a complete feature set that includes stereo Bluetooth, a mega pixel camera and EV-Do support. Overall, it's a unique, powerful and attractive phone that successfully combines music and calling functions into one handy device. For a $149 with a two-year service agreement, you can't go wrong with this beauty.

    4. Samsung Sgh-i450

Number four on the list is also by Samsung. The Sgh-i450 proves to be anything but shabby with its very attractive design, bright display and music player with an easy-to-use interface and ergonomic controls.

While a lot of cell phones have music players, not every music phone has done a good job of integrating the phone and music controls into one device. A great music phone should always feature a way to scroll through a long list of tracks quickly. Samsung deserves recognition for its Sgh-i450. With an attractive dual-slider design and easy-to-use controls, the SGH-i450 offers a lot more than you might expect.

Samsung's music phone includes a broad selection of multimedia features, excellent call quality and sharp music performance that combine to make a solid, dependable device. Unfortunately, the Sgh-i450 isn't offered by a U.S. carrier, but you can get an unlocked version for about $400.
