The TomTom XXL 540 S is a GPS with a 5-inch touch-screen display that offers good performance and a strong set of navigational features. If you're interested in a device that gets you to where you need to go without lots of fancy bells and whistles, this could be the GPS for you.

Although it's not as fancy as some other devices on the market, it offers everything essential for the frequent traveler to reach their destinations on time. The XXL 540 S has a suggested retail price of $300, but that has been lowered to around $200, depending on where you shop.

The XXL 540 S doesn't come loaded with a ton of advanced features that you may find on more expensive and upscale GPS devices.  For instance, you won't find Bluetooth, hands-free calling, Internet connectivity, and the like.  However, it does perform its intended function of pointing you in the right direction well. 

Best of all is its large 5-inch touch-screen that is easily viewable from a distance.  Once mounted to your windshield via the included EasyPort mount and cradle, you can view directions clearly, even if you have a larger vehicle like a truck.  The only negative to this larger screen size is that the XXL 540 S is not the most portable GPS out there.

Unlike some other GPS devices, the XXL 540 S loads and achieves a usable satellite signal pretty quickly. The menu interface is very user friendly and has large icons to help you search for what you are looking for. It comes with support for 22 different languages too. 

You can search for points of interest (POI) either by their name or their category, such as restaurants, gas stations, lodging, and more. Entering and searching is painless using the on-screen keypad. Many times you will only have to type a few letters of your destination, as the system has an auto complete feature that will produce a list of places containing those letters. If you are a little on the impatient side, you may want to get your data while your car is off the road and stationary, as searches can take extra time in a moving car.
