TomTom One XL Portable GPS Review - Design and Cosmetics
(Page 2 of 4 )
Keeping with the ongoing theme of the XL, TomTom has given this unit a very simple design. As a matter of fact, it only has one external button around
the outside of the casing, which is the on/off button. The casing is an attractive silver plastic with black accents. Also, on the bottom of the unit you can find an SD card slot, a mini USB port, and a power connector. The back of the unit sports the speaker, which is obviously used for voice directions. Other than that, all of the controls are internal, and they are controlled by way of the touch-screen LCD display.
The XL's touch-screen is much larger than its predecessor's, measuring 4.3 inches compared to 3.5 inches. That is one of the biggest, and only, differences in the two TomTom models. The screen itself is very vibrant and colorful with its 480 x 272 pixel resolution and 64,000 available colors. Also, the screen is visible in almost any type of lighting condition, including daytime and night time; the device has settings for each. The screen can also be customized by the user by
changing the color scheme used for the menus. There are a total of 10 different color schemes to fit most preferences.

Even with the larger screen in the XL, the device remains quite compact and very portable. The unit measures 4.7 x 3.4 x 1.2 inches, and it weighs a mere 7.4 ounces. TomTom has done a nice job of increasing the LCD size in the XL while maintaining the device's portability.
