TomTom GO 720 Portable GPS Unit - Performance

    Performance

The performance of the route calculations feature is only average in the Go 720.  This device will get you to your destination, but the directions it gives aren't always the fastest or most accurate.  In a recent independent test, the Go 720 was tested against the Magellan Maestro 4050 and the Garmin Nuvi 680.  The competition uses NAVTEQ maps, while TomTom models use the Tele Atlas mapping system in its GPS models.  In these independent tests, the Go 720 was the worst out of the three models tested in terms of finding the best route to a desired destination.  Some tests showed the Go 720's route to be 30% longer than the competition's route.  With that being said, the Go 720 will get you to your destination but maybe not as fast as some other GPS models would.

The processor in the GO 720 is a 400 MHz processor with 64 MB of RAM; this device also includes 2 GB of internal flash memory.  It finds directions within a matter of seconds, and it usually takes about a minute for the device to find a satellite fix when turned on.

The battery life for this device is rated for 5 hours before needing a charge.  The performance of the speaker in this device is relatively good with voices sounding pretty clear through the built-in speaker.  By the way, this device offers over 30 different voices which can be used, as well as some celebrity voices which can be downloaded from the TomTom website.

Though this device may not perform as well as some others, it still does a sufficient job at finding the desired destination.  The TomTom GO 720 offers a stylish body, awesome features, and average performance for the $499 price tag.
