TomTom GO 720 Portable GPS Unit - Design

    Design

I think that most people who have seen the GO 720 would agree that it is a very good-looking device.  The body of the device consists of a black, grey, and silver finish.  The device is sleek, and it is the perfect size for a portable GPS.  The GO 720 is small enough to fit into your handbag or briefcase with ease, yet the LCD screen is large enough to be very functional.  The overall dimensions of the GO 720 are 4.6 x 3.2 x 0.9 inches, and it is relatively light weight at just under 8 ounces.  The unit feels solid and well-built.  The size of this device is perfect for the car and also for using on foot.  It is designed to be very versatile, and it is.  Whether you use it in your car, while walking, or on a bike, this device has a setting for each instance to assure accuracy of directions.

The nice-sized 4.3 inch LCD touch-screen is very high quality.  The screen is equipped with an anti-glare/anti-scratch coating, which also makes it easy to clean off fingerprints.  The screen is WQVGA resolution which is 480 x 272 pixels.  This makes the display very bright and colorful.  It is even visible in direct sunlight with a little adjusting of the brightness.  The GO 720 also features a light sensor which will automatically adjust the screen settings from day to night mode, or vice versa, just by sensing the amount of daylight.

Just below the screen, you can find a tiny microphone which is used with Bluetooth applications.  Looking at the back of the GO 720, you find the built-in speaker which works rather well for text-to-speech functions.  Also on the rear of the device is a connection for an optional additional antenna that will give the user an even better satellite signal.

Looking on the bottom of the unit, you will find a host of connections including the audio out (3.5 mm), TomTom connector, reset button, USB connector, and the memory card slot.  The GO 720 stores all of the maps on its internal 2 GB of memory, which means that the memory card slot may be used for things like music and photos.  This device has a cool music feature which I will discuss a bit later.

The TomTom Go 720 comes equipped with the following items in the box:

    •  TomTom GO 720
    • Windshield Mount
    • Desk Dock
    • Car Charger
    • Documentation
    • CD-ROM

The maps are pre-loaded into this device, and the maps vary, obviously, with what country you are buying the device in.  The U.S. version comes equipped with maps of U.S. and Canada.
