TomTom GO 720 Portable GPS Unit
Right off the bat, I had high hopes for the TomTom GO 720 because it makes a good first impression. There is no doubt this portable GPS system is very attractive looking, with its ideal size and thickness. Indeed, that first impression got me excited to find out more about its performance and features. And after digging in deeper, I found that the GO 720 has some great features and middle of the road performance. Keep reading to get the full scoop.

Yeah, there probably are better performing GPS systems out there, but this one has some features that others don't offer, such as an easy to use interface and a new map-sharing function (more about that later). I've seen better performing portable GPS systems out there, but that's not to say that this one is horrible; it's just not at the top of the list. Nevertheless, TomTom is the best-selling portable GPS brand in the world, so you know that you are getting a quality product when it is sporting the TomTom name.
The GO 720 is priced somewhat competitively at $499 MSRP. This GPS unit was released in July of 2007, so it is relatively new on the market. As of the date of this writing, I have not found this device for much less than the MSRP. Of course with time, the price will fall a bit. In my opinion, I would wait for the price to fall to around $350, because this device is more competitive with other GPS units in this price range. At $350, the GO 720 would be about the same price as the Garmin Nuvi 350 and the Magellan Maestro 4040.
One thing that I don't like about TomTom is that there are different versions of the GO 720 depending on what country you live in. For instance, one nice feature of the European version of the GO 720 is the speech function, which allows the user to say a street or place and the unit will find the route without even having to touch the screen. This feature is currently not available in the North American version, and it is disappointing because that is a good feature to have. Maybe there is a new version on its way that will offer this feature, or maybe even updates to the software that will allow this feature to work in the North American models. We'll have to wait and see.
