The RIM BlackBerry 9000 aka the BlackBerry Bold

The RIM BlackBerry 9000, or BlackBerry Bold will be a hit with BlackBerry fans and those looking for a new smart phone. It comes with GPS, WiFi, and 3G. Let's take a closer look at this eagerly-awaited mobile device.

The BlackBerry Bold gets its name from the brilliance of its display. People who were lucky enough to test the Bold remarked that its display was both bold and brilliant, and the name stuck. AT&T is expected to be the official carrier of the BlackBerry Bold, and it should be available in the US by the time you read this article. You can expect the Bold’s price to start somewhere in the $300 range.

The BlackBerry Bold keeps its style similar to earlier phones in the product line and most closely resembles the BlackBerry 8800 in terms of its size and design, although the Bold does look more modern with its chrome-like lining and black color. It also appears to be slightly larger and heavier than the 8800. The Bold’s dimensions are 4.5 inches tall by 2.6 inches wide by 0.5 inches deep. The BlackBerry Bold weighs in at 4.7 ounces.

In terms of smart phones on the market from other manufacturers, the BlackBerry Bold probably most closely resembles the Motorola Q9H. The BlackBerry Bold’s layout consists of a full QWERTY keyboard that is black with white and red lettering, a trackball, and large navigational buttons which are sensitive to the touch and are responsive and easy to maneuver. The sides of the BlackBerry Bold are marked by volume controls, convenience keys on both the left and the right, charging leads, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a mute button.

One of the best and most improved features of the BlackBerry Bold’s design is its externally accessible microSD port. This is a great convenience to have as you do not have to bother with removing the phone’s battery in order to insert a media card; this was an issue with previous BlackBerry models. The Bold also comes equipped with a super bright notification LED. The LED is so bright it can be a nuisance, but I guess it does what it is intended to do, and that is notify. As with previous RIM offerings, the BlackBerry Bold is manufactured solidly but is not too heavy and feels great in your hands.
