Sony Ericsson Equinox TM717 for T-Mobile
The Equinox TM717 from Sony Ericsson is a new flip phone available for T-Mobile subscribers. The design looks good despite being simple, but it fails to deliver at times in terms of practicality. Let's take a closer look.
It's Sony Ericsson's insistence on using proprietary ports on their phones that causes the problem. Other than that, the Equinox TM717 is a decent phone with a good set of features to keep you entertained. You can pick up the Equinox for $159.99 with the Even More Plus plan from T-Mobile, or you can get it for only $49.99 with a two-year Even More plan from the carrier after rebates.
The basic features on the Equinox include a speakerphone, text and multimedia messaging, conference calling, call waiting, a calculator, a stopwatch, a timer, and an alarm clock. Basic organizational tools include a calendar, a task list, and a notepad.
You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the Equinox and an additional 250 on the SIM card. You can input several phone numbers, email addresses, street addresses, notes, and more for each. You can also sort your contacts into groups for easier use and allocate a picture or ringtone for each. There are 23 basic ringtones that come loaded onto the Equinox, but you can always download more or use your favorite MP3s. Even better, you can allocate a specific light effect or video clip to each.
There's also the additional Caller Tunes service, which will play a certain MP3, sound effect, or comedy clip that people will hear when calling you. I personally don't understand why people would choose this, as it's pretty annoying, but different strokes for different folks I guess. Beyond personalizing your contacts list, you can also customize the phone with several different themes, wallpapers, and screen savers.
