SanDisk isn't joking when they say their MP3 player offers big sound and lots of features in a tiny package. At just 2.16 x 1.36 x 0.6 in and weighing at .85 oz., the little device packs a lot of punch. Now, many thought the first generation Clip felt cheap, but many didn't care because it could be purchased cheaply. The Clip+ has received a major overhaul to its body and build quality.
The creaky plastic present in the device's predecessor has been replaced by a more solid-feeling black plastic main backing and clip. The face of the new Sansa Clip+ is very similar to the original Clip, as both feature clear plastic with a colored backing. The new player is also less blocky and features a slightly curved plastic back plate that wraps ever-so-slightly around the edges of the front. The new Sansa Clip comes in black, red, and blue. Essentially, the Clip+ feels like it has a high-quality take on its predecessor, which many consumers will surely embrace with open arms -- especially at these prices.
There are also some minor differences between the new Clip and its predecessor's layout. The new Sansa MP3 player features a square-shaped control pad, rather than the circular one present on its older model. The new version still utilizes the same five-way configuration, with play/pause, track FF/RW, and a contextual menu button surrounding the device's center select key.
The volume rocker has also been relocated from the right edge to the left, which is directly under the standard mini-USB port. This move, though minor, was made in order to make room for a MicroSD card slot. SanDisk has also decided to eliminate the hold-and-power switches and instead, opted to add a power button to the top of the player and incorporate hold functionality into the home key on the front of the device.
It should also be pointed out that the two-color yellow and blue OLED screen is the same as the screen featured on the original Sansa Clip. Brightness can be adjusted effortlessly, and the screen is easily viewed in direct sunlight.
