SanDisk Sansa Fuze MP3 Player Review - Design
(Page 2 of 4 )
The Sansa Fuze, as I mentioned before, is the middle-of-the-line player from SanDisk's Sansa line of portable players. The size of the Fuze is right in between the View and the Clip – the overall dimensions are 1.9 inches wide, by 0.3 inches thick, by 3.1 inches tall. The Fuze only weighs a couple of ounces, so this player is built for portability. It will easily fit into your shirt or pants pocket, and you won't even know that it's there.

Looking at the front of this little guy, you'll first notice the 5-way click wheel. It is the same one used on the Sansa View. You'll also notice the 1.9 inch LCD screen. The click wheel is used to navigate through the menu system of the Fuze, and it does a sufficient job of doing so – nothing special here. The 1.9 inch LCD display is small, but it's not bad for such a small player, and the video looks smooth on-screen. If video is your thing, though, you would definitely want to spend a few extra bucks and go with the Sansa View, with its larger 2.4 inch screen.
If you're looking for a player to exclusively listen to music, the Fuze may be a good choice for you. The video support for this player is rather weak, but you can convert unsupported formats to a compatible format with free conversion software – it's just bit of a hassle. The compatible formats for video are: JPEG and MPEG4; for music: MP3, WMA, secure WMA, WAV, Audible, and Overdrive (audio books).
The body of the Fuze is nicely built with a shiny plastic front and a heavy-duty metallic back-piece. The overall build quality feels good. The Fuze is available in a variety of colors, including black (2GB, 4GB), blue, pink, red (all 4GB), and silver (8GB).
Looking at the rest of this device, the bottom of the player is where you'll find the proprietary USB port and the headphone jack. It's a little disappointing that SanDisk didn't equip this player with a standard USB or mini USB port for transfers and charging, but it's really not that big of a deal – you just have to make sure not to lose the one included with your purchase. Also, on the side of the player is a microSD card slot, which will add up to 12GB of memory. This is a great feature that could potentially turn your Fuze into a 20GB MP3 player – plenty of room for most music collections, along with some videos as well.
