Samsung Glint SCH-u350 from Alltel and Verizon Wireless Escapade
(Page 1 of 4 )
Do you want a fancy cell phone, or something that does just a few things really well? If you're in the latter category, keep reading. The pair of cell phones featured in this review may not be designed to compete with the iPhone, but they get the job done.
While it seems like the big craze nowadays in the cellular phone market is smartphones with laundry lists of features, for many, simplicity is the key. Many people, perhaps in the minority, simply want a cell phone in case of emergency or just to keep in touch with others.
Today we will review two fairly simple, yet effective cell phones, that, while lacking many bells and whistles, serve their main purpose of phone communication. These phones are the Samsung Glint SCH-u350 from Alltel and the Verizon Wireless Escapade.
Samsung Glint SCH-u350
The Samsung Glint SCH-u350 is a flip phone for the budget-minded that does little else than serve as a phone. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that. The Glint has a nice, yet simple design and good performance in terms of call quality. It comes with all the basic features you would need in a phone, and Bluetooth as well.
The best feature, however, is its price. You can get the Glint for free after rebates if you subscribe to a one-year service agreement with Alltel or for $139.99 without the contract. This is a great phone to have for young kids, or for those not caught up in the hype of the smartphone craze.
As stated earlier, the feature set on the Samsung Glint SCH-u350 is quite basic. You get text and multimedia messaging, voice commands, three-way calling, speed dialing, call forwarding, and an alarm clock. The Glint can also help you stay organized with its calendar, calculator, unit converter, and memo pad. You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the Glint and save up to five phone numbers and two email addresses per contact. For sorting purposes, you can group your contacts according to their category and also assign a ringtone and a photo to each as well. There is 52MB of internal memory on the Glint for your overall storage needs.
Moving along in the features department, we get a nice upgraded feature in the form of Bluetooth that supports hands-free kits and wireless headsets, just to name a few. GPS capability is also onboard. There is a WAP browser if you desperately need it to check email or other news; however, it does not look the greatest on the limited display of the Glint, and is really more of a hassle to navigate than it is worth. Still, it's good to have if you have an important email coming through and are on the road away from a computer.
You can try to keep up with the Joneses of today's app craze by downloading some apps for the Glint off of Alltel's MobileShop if you so wish. Do keep in mind that surfing for apps and using the WAP browser will cut into your airtime, so don't go overboard and then get hit with a surprisingly large bill with overages at the end of the month.
