Are you a klutz? A mountain man? Do you need a phone that can handle a lot of abuse? If so, the Samsung Convoy SCH-U640 might be up your alley. The Convoy is designed to meet military specifications for durability. But it's more than just a sturdy phone.
Besides being rugged, it also has a good feature set that includes such extras as a music player and a camera. You can get the Convoy SCH-U640 for $49.99 after rebates with a two-year contract from Verizon Wireless. By itself, the phone costs $239.99.
The basic features on the SCH-U640 include a speakerphone, text and multimedia messaging, a stop watch, a calculator, an alarm clock, and a world clock. To help you keep organized, there is a calendar and a memo book, too. You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the phone and input several phone numbers, email addresses, a street address, and more for each.
You can separate your contacts into groups and allocate a photo and ringtone to each. There are 20 polyphonic ringtones that come standard on the Convoy, but you can download more from Verizon if you wish, using the phone's WAP 2.0 browser. You can also use the browser to download custom wallpapers, themes, and screen savers to give the phone a more personal look.
Beyond the basics, the Convoy SCH-U640 comes with stereo Bluetooth for use with compatible wireless devices. The phone also supports USB mass storage, voice commands, voice dialing, and you can sync it to your PC.
The Convoy also has Push-to-talk capabilities that let you instantly connect to others with the service that functions similar to walkie-talkies. The PTT service costs $5 per month, but is well worth it if you have a lot of friends on the network. You can also keep in contact with others via instant messaging on the SCH-U640 as well as through email as it supports POP3 accounts.
