The Need
When I was younger, I had a photographic memory. On a daily basis I was capable of remembering the 48 line numbers, their work unit codes and part numbers of the equipment I worked on. At the same time I knew exactly what we had in the shop and the status of every item -- what was out for parts, which parts were needed, and so forth.
But somewhere along the line, old age caught up to me and the photographic memory ran out of film. I first tried to use a Franklin Planner, but it was cumbersome and often stayed on my desk. My wife bought me my first Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) in the form of a Sony Clié SJ20 which was monochrome and soon thereafter I upgraded to the color SJ30. The Clié did a great job of keeping me organized and entertained for nearly four years, but problems with program interactions on the Palm Operating System (Palm OS) version 4.2 and Sony's proprietary high-resolution hardware convinced me to upgrade.
I wanted to stay with the Palm OS (the thought of dealing with another Windows variant just turned me cold), specifically OS 5, and I was hoping for .mp3 capability so I wouldn't need a dedicated player. Anything else was pretty much gravy, but after some research and much soul-searching (not really), I decided to go high-end and invest in the T|X by Palm Inc.
With eBay Buy it Now prices ranging between $180 and $240 (not counting taxes and shipping), this tightwad was hard-pressed to justify to himself the expense, but between the anticipated features, future-proofing and the fat paycheck I got from Dev Hardware for a bunch of articles, I bit the bullet and bought a refurbished T|X from Trading Circuit (a Circuit City business) for $201 total.
