    Palm Pre: The Sequel

Yesterday we began taking a close look at the long-anticipated Palm Pre from Sprint. As a smartphone, it invites comparison with Apple's iPhone. How does it measure up? In this conclusion to our two-part review, we look at just how capable a multitasker this workhorse of a mobile device really is.

An area where the Palm Pre does not fall short and in fact surpasses its competition is in its multitasking and notifications system. While with other smartphones, an incoming call or IM may interrupt and overtake your current actions, this is not the case with the Palm Pre. The Pre’s Deck of Card feature allows you to simultaneously have various applications open at once and toggle from one to another by minimizing and maximizing windows, similar to a desktop.

There is no set limit as to how many applications you can have open at once, other than the memory they consume. The more memory consuming items you have running, obviously the smaller the amount of apps you can run at once. Regardless, the Palm Pre still is powerful enough to allow the simultaneous running of various apps without too much of a hindrance.

Even when working with several applications open at once, the device runs smoothly thanks also to the notifications bar on the Palm Pre. The notifications bar will present you with any incoming calls, messages, e-mails, appointments, etc. by popping up at the bottom of the screen, rather than dominating the entire phone.

This allows you to continue usage of your current application with minimal interruption but still be notified at the same time of anything of importance. After all, there’s nothing worse than being in the middle of reading something to be completely interrupted by a call from someone.
