Nokia N800 - Web Browsing
Browsing the Internet is the intended purpose of the N800, and it does a good job of that as far as speed and ease of use goes. The N800 has a 330 MHz TI OMAP 2420 processor with 128 MB SDRAM and 256 MB flash memory. The processor does a sufficient job of processing information at relatively fast speeds, even with multiple applications running at the same time. It takes about 30 seconds or so to power the N800 on and to get to the home page. Web pages load pretty fast as compared with other tablet PCs.
The operating system used in the N800 is the Internet Tablet OS 2007 Edition. This OS is a big improvement over the previous OS used in the Nokia 770. The N800 comes equipped with Opera 8 for Web browsing. Other software applications included with the N800 are a PDF reader, notepad application, sketching application, and many others.
The home page of the N800 is really nice. It includes a Google search bar (or Wikipedia), a clock, RSS headlines, Internet radio, and Internet shortcuts. The screen also displays buttons for the Web, contacts, and a list of applications. Overall, the home page is set up very nicely. All of the default settings and button locations are user-adjustable.
Viewing web pages is a relatively good experience. Web pages show up small in the browser, but you can zoom in to a page by using the zoom controls on top of the device. Another cool feature of the N800 is the grab-and-drag feature with the stylus. You can place the stylus on a web page and drag it to move across the page, which is very simple and innovative.
There are two ways of connecting the N800 to a wireless network: 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The N800 picks up on Wi-Fi networks very easily whether you are at home or at an Internet cafe. You can also use your cell phone's Bluetooth network to connect to the Internet, although this is usually not the fastest connection. Bluetooth-enabled peripherals, such as keyboards, are also compatible with the N800.
The N800 does not have an external keyboard for typing. There is a QWERTY keyboard on the touch-screen display, and there is also a handwriting recognition program in this device. This handwriting program is not very easy to use, and often misinterprets the letters.
