Navigon 5100 Portable GPS Device - Performance

I did some research on the Navigon 5100 to find out about the performance of the device, and the research shows that it is a pretty good performer. The one area that the 5100 lags behind in is the start-up time. Recent tests have shown that it can take up to 7 minutes to turn the unit on and get a satellite fix. This is much slower than other GPS models that I have looked at in the past. This figure will vary slightly, depending upon where you are located.

Once you get past the slow start-up times, the 5100 really shines. This device will hold a satellite fix very well under normal conditions. The 5100 calculates routes very fast -- much faster than most of its competition. This device will also calculate reroutes very quickly and accurately, which is useful for those times when you accidentally take a wrong turn or are trying to avoid traffic congestion. Overall, the navigational function of this device is among the fastest that I have tested, except for the slow start-up time of course.

The speaker sounds up to par with the competition when it comes to clarity and loudness. Spoken words are easy to hear, and street names are usually pronounced correctly. The battery included with the Navigon 5100 is a rechargeable 1200 mAh lithium ion battery, which is rated for 4.5 hours of use before needing a charge.

The overall performance of the Navigon 5100 is excellent with the exception of the start-up times. When it comes to the Navigon 5100's performance, the old saying rings true -- "good things come to those who wait."
