Navigon 5100 Portable GPS Device
When people think about portable GPS manufacturers, they usually think of Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom. Many people have not heard of Navigon, but they are not new to the GPS business. Navigon has been a leader in the GPS industry since 1991, but they have only recently begun to release portable GPS units in North America. Keep reading to see what they have done with their recently released Navigon 5100.
This past summer, Navigon released the Navigon 5100 and 7100 in North America. The Navigon 2100 was released in October. The Navigon 2100, 5100, and 7100 will carry a MSRP price of $249, $499, and $649 respectively.
In this review, I would like to focus on the mid-level Navigon 5100 unit. This device became available for purchase in July of 2007. I have seen prices on the Internet for this unit hovering around $450, as of the date of this writing. The price of this portable GPS unit may be a bit too high for it to compete with similar models from TomTom and Garmin. In order for the Navigon 5100 to compete with its lower-priced competitors, I would expect to see a major price drop.

If my prediction of a price drop does occur for the 5100, this model could be a big seller for Navigon. I found the 5100 to be an all-around excellent portable GPS unit, with no major downfalls. An easy to use interface and some cool new features will help to make the 5100 stand out from the rest. Navigon seems to know what they are doing in the style department, as well, making the bodies of their three new GPS models very attractive.
