Mio DigiWalker C230 Portable GPS Unit - Design

The C230 is a very sleek looking device with its smooth curves and grey and black exterior. The device is very compact, which can be good and bad. It's good because you can take this device just about anywhere with no portability issues whatsoever. It's bad because the small size makes for somewhat cramped controls on the touch-screen display. It's just a matter of personal preference. The overall dimensions of the C230 are 4.2 inches wide by 3.2 inches tall by 0.9 inches deep, and it weighs just over 6 ounces.

The LCD display is a big improvement over its predecessor's display, which was very hard to view in the sunlight. The C230's display, on the other hand, is easy to view in sunlight or at night. It has an automatic night setting that adjusts the backlighting for less eye strain. The touch-screen display sports 65,000 vivid colors at 320 x 240 pixel resolution. The overall size of the display is 3.5 inches, which is pretty standard for an entry-level GPS device.

The body of the C230 has minimal exterior controls. The power button is on the top of the device, and there is a locking switch on the back to keep it from accidentally turning on while in a bag or purse. There is a USB port on the bottom of the device, along with an SD card expansion slot, which is always nice to have.

So where are the volume controls? Well, the exterior of the device doesn't have any dedicated volume controls. You must go through the internal menu system to find the volume controls, which I find a bit of a hassle. To combat this problem, Mio has included an auto-volume feature which raises the volume of the device as your car goes faster. This feature pretty much makes up for the lack of easy-to-get-to volume controls.

The included dashboard/windshield mounting arm is nice. It allows the user to rotate the device horizontally or vertically for the best viewing angle possible.
