Mio DigiWalker C230 Portable GPS Unit
Mio is not one of the biggest names when it comes to portable GPS devices, but they are surely making a name for themselves with the release of some very popular navigation systems. In the spring of 2007, Mio released the C220. The C220 has been popular, but some users have complained about the lack of text to speech (TTS) functionality and a below average LCD display. Mio has addressed these issues and more in the new Mio DigiWalker C230, released in fall 2007. Read on to find out more!

The Mio C230 is one of the best entry-level portable GPS devices on the market right now. It is one of the few navigation systems for under $200 that offers TTS functionality. I am a firm believer that TTS is one of the most important safety features in a GPS device. This feature not only tells you to "turn left in 100 feet," but also tells you the street name on which to turn. Using this feature allows you to keep your eyes on the road and not on your GPS device. It's especially useful when there are a lot of streets in the general area you wish to turn, and it can get a bit confusing on which street to actually turn.
The C230 is in direct competition with models such as the Garmin Nuvi 200 and the TomTom One. The C230 costs less than both of these other models. I've seen the C230 for as little as $170 at online stores. For about $100 more than the C230, you can step up to the Mio C520 (read my review). The C520 has a larger screen and a few more features than the C230. Looking at the numbers, it's easy to see that Mio is very competitive in the portable GPS market, which should benefit consumers greatly with lower prices across the board.
