    Mio C520 GPS - Features

    Features

The number of features in the C520 is pretty good considering the price of the device. This unit is equipped with a 20 channel SiRFIII chip, and the North American model comes with maps of the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada through TeleAtlas maps. Traditionally, TeleAtlas has not performed as well as Navteq maps, and that remains true in this case as well. TeleAtlas is improving though.

Navigation is accomplished with ease with this device because of the easy to use interface. Users can find directions in a variety of ways such as shortest route, fastest route, or most economical route. You will also be able to avoid things like roadblocks or toll roads. And this device has a nice recalculation of route mode for when you make a wrong turn. Maps are shown in either 2D or 3D. Navigation is basically standard in terms of features and usability.

The C520 is equipped with TTS, as previously mentioned, which is fast becoming an industry standard. This feature will only work in English, and there are 14 different choices for voices, which are chosen by the user.

The C520 has a relatively large database of Points of Interest (POI) and managing them is easy. You can search for POIs a variety of ways including address, history, or near GPS coordinates. Also, if a POI has a phone number listed in the system, you can call them directly through the GPS unit itself. This function is accomplished through the use of a cell phone and the Bluetooth capabilities of the C520. The Bluetooth feature is limited, though, as the C520 will not allow you to transfer call history or contacts into the device. I expect the Bluetooth feature to be more user-friendly in future Mio models.

I mentioned earlier that the C520 is a multimedia device. This device has a built-in music player and video player. The file formats supported by this device are very limited, but they do include some file converting software, which will convert your music and video files to an acceptable format. The music and video players are very basic, but they are sufficient for watching videos or playing music. You do get an equalizer, as well as the ability to create playlists. Videos look relatively good on the 4.3 inch LCD display.

The Mio C520 comes equipped with the following items in the box:

    • Car Charger
    • AC Adapter
    • Vehicle Mount (windshield or dashboard)
    • USB Cable
    • Reference Material
