Microsoft Zune HD (32GB)
The Microsoft Zune HD is a product of much trial and error from the manufacturer in an attempt to wrest market share from the omnipresent iPod. While it has certainly experienced its troubles in the past, the newest version, the Zune HD, is a much stronger competitor from Microsoft that could help the company gain some ground in the portable media player market. Today we'll take a closer look.
Although the Zune HD has some shortcomings in terms of its extra features, in terms of its media playing capabilities, it is an excellent device. Those looking at alternatives to the iPod who simply want a media-playing device, and not tons of apps and the like, should give the Zune HD a serious look. You can get the Zune HD in its 16 GB version for a retail price of $219 or its 32 GB version for $289.
The Zune HD is a music lover's dream. This is particularly true if you want to go "beyond the music" and learn background information on artists, or delve deeper into more of their songs or past albums. Rather than simply playing a song and showing album art, the software on the Zune HD offers users much more.
For example, if you choose an artist, such as Jay-Z, to listen to, you will be taken to a screen that lists all of his album history, as well as sections detailing his biography, and photos. You will even be given suggestions on related artists you might enjoy, since you're interested in Jay-Z. You can think of this setup as something similar to the one offered on Amazon.com when you shop for music.
Depending on whether you have a paid Zune subscription or connect to the Internet through the Zune, which we will discuss later, you will also be able to preview and download more songs from the artist. This flexibility and expanded capability will not only allow you to enjoy your music, but also help you to get more immersed in it. It is especially good if you are trying out a new genre of music. Regarding syncing your own music to the Zune HD, it supports most major audio formats as well as audio books.
