    Jensen NVX225 GPS - Design

    Design

The design of the NVX225 is very basic in terms of looks. It is square in shape, and it sports a black and silver color scheme. One bonus of this device is that it is a good size, nice and small. The overall dimensions of this GPS unit are 3.6 x 3.1 x 0.8 inches, and it weighs less than 7 ounces. This means it is very portable and easy to carry in a bag, or to switch back and forth between multiple cars.

The front of the unit sports the 3.5 inch QVGA LCD screen. This touch-screen display is very average compared with similarly priced GPS units. The touch-screen is the correct sensitivity, but the display itself has washed-out colors when viewing it in the sunlight. I do like the fact that Jensen has included automatic night and day settings for the display, though. There is an included stylus to use on the TFT touch-screen, but a finger works just as well.

The rear panel of the NVX225 houses the built-in speaker, which sounds relatively good. I would expect this from Jensen, because they are a manufacturer of speakers as well as GPS units. Also on the rear panel is the internal stylus holder. On top of the device are the menu and power buttons. It's nice to have a dedicated menu button that will bring you to the main menu at any time, and some GPS devices don't have that.

The sides of the device hold all of the inputs and outputs of the device including an SD/MMC card slot, 3.5 mm headphone jack, USB port, external antenna port, volume, and DC adapter port. The SD/MMC card slot is a great feature in this device that is not available in a lot of GPS units. It will allow the user to increase the memory capacity of the device.

The UI is quite clunky looking; it almost seems like it is a few years behind the competition. In other words, this device would have been up to date five years ago but not today. Aside from the dated UI, the NVX225 has a decent full QWERTY keyboard that can be switched to an AZERTY keyboard for the French Canadians out there. This device does come equipped with maps for the U.S. and Canada, and languages to accommodate both countries.
