HTC Athena Advantage X7501 - Design

    Design

The design of the X7501 is rather unique in that it can be used in mini laptop form, or the keyboard can be disconnected and the device can be used like a PDA or a smart phone. The keyboard is detachable, and although it is very thin (about 3mm), it is very strong and durable. The keyboard is attached to the rest of the device by a relatively strong magnet, which works very well for this application.  The magnet is so strong that in the user's manual, HTC warns the user to keep credit cards at least two inches away from the magnet because it could demagnetize the card. The thin keyboard also doubles as a screen cover that consists of an attractive and durable leather casing.  This innovative design feature from HTC works great, and provides the user with a balanced portable laptop which can be used in portrait or landscape mode.

The five inch LCD touch-screen is awesome. Over 64,000 colors are bright and vivid on this VGA screen. The large TFT LCD screen has a resolution of 480 x 640 pixels.  The screen is a sufficient size for watching movies, video clips, viewing documents, or for browsing the Internet with limited eye strain. Its touch-screen capabilities respond well to either a finger or the included stylus.

The full QWERTY keyboard is pretty responsive and easy to use. The keys are relatively large and spacious when compared to other smart phones on the market. The only drawback to this keyboard is that it must be used like a laptop keyboard and not like a typical smart phone keyboard, which is operated by the use of your thumbs. This makes it tough to type sometimes, because the keyboard becomes cramped when all your fingers are being used to type.

The X7501 is very ergonomic in its design with buttons and controls located in easy to find places on the device. The left side of the device sports a nice joystick used for navigation. There are some nice inputs/outputs on this device such as a mini USB port, standard headphone jack, and a VGA-out port. The bottom of the X7501 houses the sim card as well as a miniSD slot.

The X7501 is relatively large when compared to other smart phones on the market, but it is relatively small when compared to other portable laptops. The dimensions of this device are 5.25 x 3.85 x 0.63 inches, and it weighs about 3/4 of a pound.  The device will fit into a bag or briefcase with ease, but it will add a bit of weight to it.
