Google and Verizon to Make Android Phones: Bad News for Apple - The Devices
(Page 4 of 4 )
There were also rumors circulating as early as 2006 that Google was in the process of defining technical specifications and showing various prototypes to cell phone manufacturers and network operators. According to sources at the time, it was believed that as many as 30 prototype phones were in existence at Google headquarters.
Of course, all of this is just to say that the technology to create these Android phones has been present for Google since at least 2005. Why Google decided to partner up with Verizon as opposed to releasing their own handset independently remains unexplained.
Much of the information concerning Verizon's product with Google has been kept top secret, but Verizon did recently release a statement that said they were going to unveil two new Google phones this month and that "initial entries would just be the first part of a multiyear roadmap."
Very recently, news from undisclosed Verizon insiders has hit the Internet. According to these sources, Verizon's Android strategy will shake things up quite a bit.
Apparently "Droid" is the brand name that will be applied to Verizon's Android devices, which will be made by Motorola. But the Droid name will not be just the name of a single device as previously reported.
The end of October has come and gone, and Verizon has yet to release one of these new Google phones, or give an exact date of when they will hit the market. They may be beat by HTC's "Droid Eris," which will definitely be widely released on November 6, just in time for the holiday season.
