Extending the Blackberry - MobiVoice, PP 50MS, QuickLink Pen

    MobiVoice

MobiVoice by Cybit, shown in Figure 14-13, is a little device that attaches to your BlackBerry to provide voice e-mail, digital voice recording, and even FM radio, which is nice to have on those long train or cab rides. Using the device, you can send compressed voice messages as e-mail, record up to five hours of voice memo, and listen to the radio whenever you want. In turn, you can listen to voicemail messages on your BlackBerry or even on your PC using the provided PC software.

    PP 50MS

The PP-50MS, shown in Figure 14-14, is a cradle device from Ipcprint.com that works with your BlackBerry to provide remote sales functions, such as processing and printing receipts on site. After sliding the BlackBerry into the cradle, the PP-50MS gives you access to a mag-stripe reader and a printer, which can be very helpful if you are a sales representative who needs to create transactions remotely.

    QuickLink Pen

The QuickLink Pen from Wizcomtech.com is a small handheld scanner that works as an electronic highlighter. Shown in Figure 14-15, you can use this tool to scan and store printed text, barcodes, and small images. The pen can store up to 1000 pages of text, which you can then transfer to your BlackBerry or PC. Connecting to a BlackBerry handheld using a serial cable, the QuickLink Pen then transfers data to the appropriate applications on your BlackBerry. It recognizes 6–22 point size text, including bold, italicized, underlined, and inverted text.

    I’m InTouch

I’m InTouch, shown in Figure 14-16, is remote access software that gives you access to information on your PC directly from your BlackBerry using the BlackBerry’s web browser. The good news is that it works with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express e-mail so you can manage messages, view attachments, and access your calendar, contacts, and files on your PC or networked drives. I’m InTouch works similarly to terminal services software and is a great way to access your PC when you are away.

    Print Me

As you might imagine, Print Me, shown in Figure 14-17, is printing and faxing software that lets you wirelessly print or fax to any network printer you have to access to from your BlackBerry. Printing e-mail, documents, and other BlackBerry data can be a time-consuming task, but with Print Me, you can use the BlackBerry to bypass synchronization with your PC and print directly to your network printers, giving you more flexibility and faster access to printed files.

Tip: Print Me also works with other PDAs and cell phones!

This chapter is from How to Do Everything with Your Blackberry, by Curt Simmons (McGraw-Hill/Osborne, 2004, ISBN: 0072255870). Check it out at your favorite bookstore today. Buy this book now.
