Extending the Blackberry - Using the Pocket Internet - Business Solutions

The PocketGenie gives you a great way to access all kinds of information using the Internet. However, this tool may restrict you because you can’t really surf the Internet. No fear, the PocketGenie automatically installs with the Pocket Internet (represented by a pi symbol on your BlackBerry Home screen). The Pocket Internet gives you the power to surf and find information you need without categories. The Pocket Internet Home screen is shown in Figure 14-10.

As you can see in Figure 14-10, Pocket Internet basically functions like a computer browser. In order to open a web page, simply click the Open a New Web Page option, and then enter the URL. The information will be retrieved from the Internet. You can then bookmark the page using the trackwheel menu options.

If you are having problems finding what you want, you can use the Google search engine, which will help you find Internet items. You can also use several Internet utilities that allow you to test for connectivity. Overall, the Pocket Internet is very streamlined and easy to use, and if you spend about ten minutes working with it, you’ll be a pro.

Tip: Save typing time—be sure to bookmark any Internet sites that you want to visit on a regular basis.

    Business Solutions

As you have learned throughout this book, the BlackBerry is great for both the business user and the individual user. The BlackBerry, however, has always been geared to the corporate professional, and the following third-party solutions were developed for corporations. In a nutshell, these third-party services extend the BlackBerry by making corporate information easier to access or providing some other type of BlackBerry-corporate link. Whether your company is already using these services or not, you should definitely read the following sections and find out about these available options.

Tip: Of course, I have not listed everything that is available here, so be sure to check BlackBerry.net for more information and to find out the latest information about third-party services.

    APRIVA Wireless Point of Sale

APRIVA Wireless Point of Sale, shown in Figure 14-11, gives you a wireless solution for payment processing. With this software, you can use your BlackBerry to process credit card transactions over the wireless network. As you can imagine, security and process management are important concerns with any payment processing system. The APRIVA software provides you with the necessary management tools, processing functions, and web reporting tools, and it even guarantees the integrity of the payment transaction. If your company needs to accept cash, credit card, or check payments on the go, then you will find this software beneficial.

    724 Interactive

724 Interactive, shown in Figure 14-12, provides an instant signal to your BlackBerry from another wireless device, such as a fire or burglar alarm. Designed for security or emergency personnel, this application gives you a way to keep in touch with other security and alerting systems. The good news about the 724 Interactive software is that it is rather diverse; you can program network devices and even web enable cameras so you can access them using the BlackBerry. You can then control the devices over the wireless network or via the 724 web interface.
