Dell has recently developed a new feature for the users of its Axim X30 and X50 Pocket PCs: GPS navigation. This new accessory is a great addition to the X30 series, which has increased the processing speeds of the Pocket PC to nearly unprecedented levels. The Dell GPS Navigation System takes advantage of the Axim’s Bluetooth capabilities and great processing speed to provide a quality system in a convenient form.
Introduction
With a price tag of $229, the Dell GPS probably is not the biggest bang you have ever had for your buck. However, it does come packaged with numerous features that may have you considering very seriously if the larger than average price is worth it. Among these is the convenience of having your GPS packaged as an application on your PDA. If you find yourself carrying your Axim around everywhere that you go regardless, then you may find it worthwhile to simply invest in adding the GPS application to it, rather than getting a new device entirely.
The Dell GPS System utilizes the NAVTECH map data system for its GPS navigation. Along with this system comes an extensive database of points of interest that will help you out a great deal when you are in a foreign area and looking for a restaurant or gas station. The NAVTECH system is also convenient, as it is the same system that is used by Internet mapping giant Mapquest. As such, if you are curious about how accurate and effective the directions provided by the Dell GPS are, then you can simply go online and visit Mapquest's website for an idea of the kind of directions that you will get.
One down side, other than the price tag, of the Dell GPS navigation system is that you will have to utilize another device other than your Axim PDA. There is a separate GPS receiver that connects to the Axim via a Bluetooth connection, hence the requirement of an Axim with Bluetooth. Although this device is significantly smaller and less obtrusive than a full-featured GPS unit, it is still somewhat inconvenient if you are looking for an integrated solution.
