Dell Axim x51v PDA Review - What's in the Box
(Page 2 of 6 )
What’s in the Box?If any of you are thinking of the movie UHF because of the title of this section, you’re not alone! Anyhow, the contents of the box are pretty much as you’d expect:
- Axim handheld
- Battery
- Cradle and cable
- Alternative connector for the power cord, to charge the Axim while not in the cradle. This is extremely handy. I use this to keep the Axim powered when I hook it up to my sound system and stream music wirelessly.
- Nylon case/sleeve. I bought a rhino-skin aluminum case, so I don’t use this.
- Manuals and CD containing driver, ActiveSync, Outlook 2003, and additional software. Of which I’m using:
- Resco File Explorer – a more powerful file explorer utility, including FTP capabilities
- Resco Registry Editor
- A bunch of games. I’ll include some screenshots to show off the graphics.
Here’s a picture from the website of the bare Axim in the cradle:

And here’s a shot of the Axim in the Rhino Skin case. You have to admit, it looks a lot tougher!

Getting Started
So I installed ActiveSync, hooked up the cradle, inserted the Axim, and waited while the ‘found new hardware’ wizard did its thing. Then I waited for ActiveSync to establish a connection. And I waited. And then I reset, reseated, re-inserted the power plug… pretty much every ‘re’ action I could think of. As a last resort, I tried the user manual. No good. So I googled it. Still nothing. So I checked the event viewer, noticed an invalid call to the RPC server, which is a service I’ve disabled. This triggered the memory of also disabling DHCP. ActiveSync needs DHCP to establish a connection. So I enabled it, and the problem was solved!
It was around this time that I discovered Aximsite.com, an invaluable resource for any Axim owner. It was here that I realized that my first issue was not likely to be my last. I’ll fill you in on that later.
So first things first. I loaded up a few games, and threw on a couple of movies. I must say, the graphics and sound quality are nothing short of fantastic. I turned on wireless by double tapping the button on the side, and was checking my gmail in seconds. I flipped the screen around to landscape for a bit – very cool. My first impressions were all extremely positive.
